The Benefits of Dry Brushing for Health and Beauty

Dry brushing is a gentle morning skin routine in which you brush dry skin with a brush or mitt in strokes towards the heart. It is said to boost circulation and lymphatic activity, remove dead skin cells, give skin a healthy glow, help prevent ingrown hairs and support the look of firmer skin. Five minutes a day is enough, and it should always be done with light, gentle strokes.

The skin is a person’s largest organ. It is estimated that as much as a third of the impurities accumulated in the body leave through the skin. Gentle dry brushing is a health and beauty routine that supports wellbeing and is worth making a habit every morning. This simple practice boosts the removal of waste substances, improves circulation, brings a beautiful glow and firmness to the skin, removes dead skin cells and helps stop body hair from growing inward. Dry brushing, which activates cell renewal, is also said to support longevity and help prevent premature skin ageing – “biohacking for the skin” at its best. To get the most out of it, do it regularly: five minutes a day can work small wonders for your beauty and health.

What does dry brushing do?

Boosts circulation and metabolism.

Dry brushing is best done in the morning because it stimulates the removal of waste substances and metabolism in general. In practice it activates the lymphatic system, which also improves fluid metabolism. Because of these effects it is worth including in fasting, cleansing and detox programmes.

Removes dead skin cells for a glow.

Brushing removes dead cells from the skin’s surface, so dull skin turns radiant, its colour brightens and it feels smoother. Sebum production balances, collagen production is supported, and dry brushing also helps clear clogged pores and stops hairs from growing inward.

Supports renewal.

Dry brushing invigorates surface circulation and improves oxygen supply to cells, creating a basis for effects against premature skin ageing. It affects wellbeing at cell level by boosting cell renewal, which is why many advocates of longevity include it in their regular morning routine.

Is eco-friendly.

There are no needless jars or tubs, and no packaging waste. All you need is a dry brush or a mitt that lasts for several years. Both nature and your wallet will thank you.

Helps against cellulite.

Dry brushing stimulates circulation and can help prevent cellulite. It also helps hide it: in plumper skin cellulite is not easily noticed. Alongside dry brushing, a vegetable-rich, alkaline diet and suitable exercise are worth following.

Is caring touch.

Dry brushing works best with firm but gentle, self-respecting strokes. Dry brushing with a mitt in particular increases secretion of the hormone oxytocin, which boosts the feeling of wellbeing and calms the mind. Calm dry brushing soothes the nervous system and eases feelings of stress.

How do you dry brush safely?

Moderation in everything, dry brushing included. Do not scrub with gritted teeth; use gentle movements, listening to your sensations and preferably focusing on your breathing. Be especially gentle if your skin is very dry or otherwise sensitive. Presence and attention to bodily sensations turn the brushing session into a mini meditation. If the skin starts to turn strongly red, ease off the pressure. Sensitive areas such as the chest are treated more lightly than others. Inflamed and sunburnt areas should be left completely alone.

When and in which direction should you dry brush?

Dry brush first thing in the morning. Many people head to the shower afterwards, where the loosened dead skin is easily rinsed away. For a luxurious touch in the shower, use the RimitaOats shower oil, in which the moisturising and caring effects of sea buckthorn and oats join the luxurious scent of neroli oil. Having become a favourite of many people with atopic skin, the Rimita shower oil gently cleanses, nourishes and moisturises, so body lotion is no longer needed after the shower.

Always brush in movements towards the heart. Start from your toes and continue with short strokes, preferably in circular movements, towards the heart. Work calmly from the feet to the knees, through the hips and up. Brush the arms starting from the fingertips towards the shoulders, always in the direction of the heart. Remember: a lot of dead cells come off the skin, so wash and dry your brush or mitt after brushing.

Are Rimita washing mitts suitable for dry brushing?

Yes. Besides different brushes, dry brushing can be done with the multi-purpose Rimita washing mitts. The extra benefit of a mitt is better “touch”: in addition to the mechanical effect, you enjoy the gentle touch more fully. Rimita has two mitts that suit dry brushing well: the Eco washing mitt is coarser, and the Sensitive mitt is designed especially for sensitive skin.
