Not all alcohols in deodorant are the same. Ethanol (ethyl alcohol) is strongly drying and can weaken the skin’s protective layer, causing dryness, redness, itching or stinging, especially on freshly shaved or sensitive skin. Cetearyl alcohol, in contrast, is a long-chain fatty alcohol made from coconut or palm plants that acts as an emulsifier and thickener and can even calm and protect the skin.
